In Hip Hop History Today “3rd Bass released Derelicts Of Dialect” June 18, 1991

Derelicts of Dialect is Queens-based emcees 3rd Bass second LP and final studio album, released on Def Jam Recordings. The album is considered to be a critical success and explicitly not aimed toward a mainstream market. It gained publicity by featuring the surprise mainstream hit “Pop Goes the Weasel,” a diss track towards Vanilla Ice. The music video features former Black Flag frontman Henry Rollins as Ice. X-Clan is dissed on songs such as “Herbalz In Your Mouth.” The album is noted for its variety of styles both musically and lyrically. Several amusing anecdotes and skits on the album draw direct influences from De La Soul’s album 3 Feet High and Rising.Derelicts of Dialect was certified gold by the RIAA three months after its release.

In Hip Hop History Today “Tupac Shakur was born” June 16, 1971

Tupac Amaru Shakur was born Lesane Parish Crooks June 16, 1971. He was also known by 2Pac and briefly as Makaveli, 2Pac was a rapper, songwriter, and actor. Shakur has sold over 75 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. His double disc albums All Eyez on Me and his Greatest Hits are among the best selling albums in the United States. Shakur began his career as a roadie, backup dancer, and MC for the alternative hip hop group Digital Underground, eventually branching off as a solo artist. The themes of most of Shakur’s songs revolved around the violence and hardship in inner cities, racism and other social problems. Both of his parents and several other of his family were members of the Black Panther Party, whose ideals were reflected in his songs. During the latter part of his career, Shakur was a vocal participant in the so-called East Coast–West Coast hip hop rivalry, becoming involved in conflicts with other rappers, producers and record-label staff members, most notably The Notorious B.I.G. and the label Bad Boy Records. On September 7, 1996, Shakur was shot multiple times in a drive-by shooting at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was taken to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, where he died six days later.

In Hip Hop History Today “Ice Cube was born” June 15, 1969

O’Shea Jackson, Sr. was born June 15, 1969, better known by Ice Cube, is a rapper, record producer, actor, and filmmaker. He began his career as a member of the hip-hop group C.I.A. and later joined N.W.A (Niggaz Wit Attitudes). After leaving N.W.A in December 1989, he built a successful solo career in music and films. Ice Cube is noted as a proficient lyricist and storyteller and is regarded as a brutally honest rapper. His lyrics are often political or socio-political, as well as violent and aggressive, and he is considered one of the founding artists in gangsta rap. He was ranked #8 on MTV’s list of the 10 Greatest MCs of All Time, while fellow rapper Snoop Dogg ranked Ice Cube as the greatest MC of all time. AllMusic has called him one of hip-hop’s best and most controversial artists, as well as “one of rap’s greatest storytellers”. In 2012, The Source ranked him #14 on their list of the Top 50 Lyricists of All Time.

In Hip Hop History Today “Freddie Gibbs was born” June 14, 1982

Freddie Gibbs was born and raised in Gary, Indiana, and grew up at 17th and Virginia St. on the city’s east side. Gibbs signed with Interscope Records in 2006, after which he moved to Los Angeles and recorded a debut album, but a year later the management of Interscope changed hands and the rapper was dropped. He is currently an independent artist with much success. On March 18, 2014, Gibbs released an album with producer Madlib, titled Piñata. The album received universal acclaim from music critics and peaked at 38th on the US Billboard 200 and 7th on the Billboard Top Rap Albums list.

In Hip Hop History Today “Cormega Drops The True Meaning” June 11, 2002

The True Meaning is the second studio album by Queensbridge rapper Cormega. It was critically acclaimed and won the prestigious “Independent Album of the Year” at the Source Awards 2003. He also received “Impact Artist of the Year” honors at the Underground Music Awards. It was praised for its back to basics formula, tight beats and fierce rhymes. Standout tracks include “Live Ya Life”, “Love In Love Out” which documents Cormega’s beef with fellow Queensbridge rapper Nas.

In HIp History Today “The D.O.C. was born” June 10, 1968

Tracy Lynn Curry was born June 10, 1968, primarily known by his stage name The D.O.C., is a rapper from Dallas, Texas. In addition to a solo career, he was a member of the hip hop group Fila Fresh Crew, and a creative force behind the gangsta rap group N.W.A, where he co-wrote many of their releases. He has also worked with Dr. Dre, who is one of the founders of N.W.A and produced two of his solo albums. D.O.C. also appeared on a skit called “The $20 Sack Pyramid” on Dr. Dre’s 1992 album The Chronic. After Fila Fresh Crew split up in 1988, The D.O.C. went on to pursue a successful solo career. In 1989, he released his debut album, No One Can Do It Better, which reached number-one on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart for two weeks and spawned two number one hits on the Hot Rap Songs chart: “It’s Funky Enough” and “The D.O.C. & The Doctor”. The album went platinum five years after its release. In late 1989, months after the release of No One Can Do It Better, The D.O.C. almost died when a car accident resulted in the crushing of his larynx, permanently changing his voice. Since his recovery, he has released two more albums, Helter Skelter and Deuce, both released 7 years apart. Since 2006, The D.O.C. has been working on new material for his fourth album Voices through Hot Vessels.

In Hip Hop History Today “2 Live Crew Members Arrested” June 9, 1990

Following the release of their third album, Nasty As They Wanna Be in 1989, a federal judge in Florida ruled that tracks off their record like “Me So Horny,” “D*ck Almighty” and “The F*ck Shop” were too obscene. The ruling made it illegal in certain counties of Florida to play or sell the album. The group was also restricted from performing the songs. On June 9, 1990 the group performed songs from their album and were arrested.

In Hip Hop History Today “Kanye West was born” June 8, 1977

Kanye Omari West was born June 8, 1977. He is a rapper, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, and fashion designer. West first became known as a producer for Roc-A-Fella Records; he achieved recognition for his work on rapper Jay-Z’s The Blueprint (2001), as well as hit singles for musical artists including Alicia Keys, Ludacris, and Janet Jackson. His style of production originally used high-pitched vocal samples from soul songs incorporated with his own drums and instruments. He later broadened his influences to include 1970s R&B, baroque pop, trip hop, arena rock, house, folk, alternative, electronica, synthpop, industrial and classical music.

In Hip Hop History Today “Warren G released his debut album Regulate G Funk Era” June 7, 1994

Regulate… G Funk Era is the debut studio album by Warren G. It was released in June 7, 1994 by Violator Records and distributed by the Def Jam record label. It sold three million copies in the US, reaching triple platinum status. The album’s biggest hit was the eponymous single “Regulate”, a gritty depiction of West Coast gang life which samples singer Michael McDonald’s hit “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)” and featured Nate Dogg.

In Hip Hop History Today “Aesop Rock was born” June 5, 1976

Ian Matthias Bavitz was born June 5, 1976 and is better known by his stage name Aesop Rock. He was at the forefront of the new wave of underground and alternative hip hop acts that emerged during the late 1990s and early 2000s. He was signed to El-P’s Definitive Jux label until it went on hiatus in 2010. He is a member of the groups The Weathermen, Hail Mary Mallon (with Rob Sonic & DJ Big Wiz), The Uncluded (with Kimya Dawson) and Two of Every Animal (with Cage) Regarding his name, he said: “I acquired the name Aesop from a movie I had acted in with some friends. It was my character’s name and it sort of stuck. The rock part came later just from throwing it in rhymes.
