In Hip Hop History Today “Scarface Released Mr. Scarface Is Back” October 8, 1991

Mr. Scarface Is Back is the debut solo studio album by rapper Scarface. The album was released on October 8, 1991, by Rap-a-Lot Records. The album peaked at 51 on the Billboard 200 and 13 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and was certified gold on April 23, 1993. Two singles were released, “Mr. Scarface” and “A Minute To Pray And A Second To Die”, both of which had minor success on the rap and R&B charts.

In Hip Hop History Today “RZA Released Birth of a Prince” October 7, 2003

Birth of a Prince is the third solo studio album by hip hop musician and Wu-Tang Clan leader RZA. The album was released on October 7, 2003. Unlike RZA’s other solo albums, Birth of a Prince was not released under the Bobby Digital alias, though RZA refers to himself as Bobby repeatedly and his rhymes are mostly in the Bobby Digital style rather than the pre-1998 style. The album received mixed reviews from music critics.

In Hip Hop History Today “Redman released Whut? Thee Album” October 6, 1992

Whut? Thee Album is the debut studio album by rapper Redman; it was released on October 6, 1992, by Def Jam Recordings. While taking place at Ian London Studios, North Shore Soundworks and Power Play Studios, recording sessions began in 1991 and continued into 1992. The album heavily features production from mentor and fellow Hit Squad member Erick Sermon, as well as Redman himself under his birth name, with additional production from Pete Rock. Upon its release, Whut? Thee Album debuted at number 49 on the US Billboard 200. In June 1993, the album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), exceeding the sales of 500,000 copies in the United States.

In Hip Hop History Today “Inspectah Deck Released Uncontrolled Substance” October 5, 1999

Uncontrolled Substance is the solo debut album by rapper, and Wu-Tang Clan member Inspectah Deck. The album was released on October 5, 1999 under Loud Records. Originally slated for release in 1995, the record was indefinitely postponed after a flood destroyed over 100 beats in RZA’s basement, including his original productions for the album. Eventually released four years later, Uncontrolled Substance received mostly positive reviews, and is Inspectah Deck’s most critically acclaimed album to date. The album features Wu-Tang mainstays U-God and Masta Killa, and appearances from lesser-known affiliates Street Life, Killa Sin, and LA the Darkman. The album’s liner notes state that it is dedicated to Inspectah Deck’s late father, Frank Hunter.

In Hip Hop History Today “Outkast Released Ms. Jackson” October 3, 2000

“Ms. Jackson” is a song by alternative hip hop duo OutKast. It was released in October 3, 2000 as the second single from their fourth album Stankonia. It topped the U.S. charts for the week of February 17, 2001, and won a 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. The single helped sell the album following the commercial underperformance of the lead single “B.O.B.”, which, despite nearly universal acclaim from critics, failed to chart on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and only reached #69 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. \

In Hip Hop History Today “Ja Rule Released Pain Is Love” October 2, 2001

Pain Is Love is the third studio album by rapper Ja Rule. Produced by Irv Gotti, it was released on October 2, 2001, by Def Jam and Murder Inc Records. The album received a mixed reception from critics. Pain Is Love debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was supported by three singles: “Livin’ It Up”, “Always on Time” and “Down Ass Bitch”. It was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for selling over 3,000,000 copies.

In Hip Hop History Today “Public Enemy released Apocalypse 91 The Enemy Strikes Black” October 1, 1991

Apocalypse 91… The Enemy Strikes Black is the fourth studio album by hip hop group Public Enemy, released October 1, 1991, on Def Jam Recordings. It debuts production team Imperial Grand Ministers of Funk, which consisted of producers Stuart Robertz, Cerwin ‘C-Dawg’ Depper, Gary G-Wiz, and The JBL. The album peaked at number 4 on the Billboard 200 chart and at number 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. On November 26, 1991, it was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, for shipments of one million copies in the United States.

In Hip Hip History Today “Method Man & Redman released Blackout!” September 28, 1999

Blackout! is the debut studio album by hip hop duo Method Man & Redman. It is the first full-length release by Method Man and Redman after many collaborations. The album continued a string of highly successful Def Jam releases in the late 1990s. The album debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 with first week sales of 254,000 copies and served as a bit of a precursor to the 2001 major studio film How High. Both rappers enjoyed perhaps the height of their popularity as a tandem after the success of the album and its three charted singles. The singles were also popular videos which were mainstays on MTV and BET.

In Hip Hop History Today “Lil’ Kim released The Naked Truth” September 27, 2005

The Naked Truth is the fourth studio album by rapper Lil’ Kim, released on September 27, 2005. This album was released on the first day of Kim’s sentencing, in which she went to jail for nearly a year on perjury charges. It was her last studio album released by Atlantic Records before deciding to part ways in 2008. Two official singles were released from the album: “Lighters Up” as the lead single released in September 2005 while “Whoa” served as the second and final single in February 2006. The Naked Truth is still the only female rap album to be rated with 5 mics by The Source.

In Hip Hop History Today “Shyne released Shyne” September 26, 2000

Shyne is the self-titled debut album by rapper Shyne with Sean “P. Diddy” Combs’ Bad Boy Records and was released on September 26, 2000. Shyne had been hyped prior to the album’s release as similar in style and delivery to the deceased Notorious B.I.G.. Shyne had also drawn unfavorable media attention for being convicted in June 2000 for his involvement in a nightclub shooting; Shyne was incarcerated at the time of this album’s release. The album peaked #5 on the Billboard Top 200. It sold very well, eventually achieving Gold status. It contained fewer guest artists than most Bad Boy releases. The singles from the album, “Bad Boyz,” “Bonnie & Shyne” (which both feature Barrington Levy), and “That’s Gangsta,” were only moderate hits.

In Hip Hop History Today “T.I. was born” September 25, 1980

Clifford Joseph Harris, Jr. was born September 25, 1980, better known by his stage names T.I. and Tip is a hip hop recording artist and actor from Atlanta, Georgia. He signed his first major-label record deal in 1999, with Arista Records subsidiary, LaFace Records. In 2001, T.I. formed the Southern hip hop group Pimp Squad Click (P$C), alongside his longtime friends and fellow Atlanta-based rappers. Upon being released from Arista, T.I. signed to Atlantic Records and subsequently became the co-chief executive officer (CEO) of his own label imprint, Grand Hustle Records, which he launched in 2003. T.I. is perhaps best known as one of the artists who popularized the hip hop subgenre, trap music, along with Young Jeezy and Gucci Mane, respectively.
