In Hip Hop History Today “Big Daddy Kane was born” September 10, 1968

Antonio Hardy was born September 10, 1968, better known by his stage name Big Daddy Kane. He is a Grammy Award-winning rapper who started his career in 1986 as a member of the rap group the Juice Crew. He is widely considered to be one of the most influential and skilled MCs in hip hop. Regarding the name Big Daddy Kane, he said: “The Big Daddy part and the Kane part came from two different things. The Kane part came from my fascination with the martial arts flicks when I was young.” The Big Daddy part came from the name of a character Vincent Price played in the film Beach Party. Rolling Stone magazine ranked his song “Ain’t No Half-Steppin’” #25 on its list of The 50 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs of All Time, calling him “a master wordsmith of rap’s late-golden age and a huge influence on a generation of MCs.

In HIp Hop History Today “E-40 released Breakin’ News” Sept 9, 2003

Breakin’ News is the eighth studio album by rapper E-40 released on September 9, 2003, on Sick Wid It and Jive Records. Soundscan reported that the album sold 50,000 copies in its first week on shelves. The song “Act A Ass” featuring singer Rankin Scroo (with uncredited vocals from rappers Kaveo & Young Mugzi) is featured in the film Be Cool (2005). The song peaked at #21 on the Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, while Breakin’ News’s first single, “Quarterbackin’” featuring Clipse peaked at #8 on the same chart.

In Hip Hop History Today “Canibus released Can-I-Bus” September 8, 1998

Can-I-Bus is the debut album by rapper Canibus, released on September 8, 1998 through Universal Records. The album received mixed reviews. The beats, created mostly by Wyclef Jean, were criticized for their blandness and unoriginality, but lyrically, the album was praised. Tower Records referred to Canibus as “one of the most innovative new MCs in hip-hop. The album has been certified gold by the RIAA. The song “How We Roll” also appeared on the bonus 3rd disc of Eightball’s album Lost.

In Hip Hop History Today “Eazy-E was born” September 7, 1963

Eric Lynn Wright born September 7, 1963 – March 26, 1995 better known by his stage name Eazy-E. He was a rapper who performed solo and in the hip hop group N.W.A. Wright is affectionately called “The Godfather of Gangsta rap”. He was born to Richard and Kathie Wright in Compton, California. After dropping out of high school in the tenth grade, he supported himself primarily by selling drugs before investing in Ruthless Records and becoming a rapper. When Ruthless artist Ice Cube wrote “Boyz-n-the-Hood”, Dr. Dre, Cube, and Eazy formed N.W.A. After DJ Yella, MC Ren, and Arabian Prince joined the group, N.W.A released N.W.A. and the Posse. In 1988, they released their most controversial album, Straight Outta Compton. The group released two more albums and then disbanded after Eazy released Dr. Dre from his contract. While his technical skills as a rapper were never the greatest, his distinctive delivery…over-the-top lyrics and undeniable charisma made him a star.

Inga DeCarlo Fung Marchand was born September 6, 1978, better known by her stage name Foxy Brown, is a rapper, model, and actress. She is best known for her solo work, as well as numerous collaborations with other artists and her brief stint as part of hip hop group The Firm. Her albums include Ill Na Na in 1996, followed by Chyna Doll in 1999 and Broken Silence in 2001. She also performed on the 1997 self-titled album by the Firm, the only album to be released by that group to date.

Trapped in Crime is the third studio album by rapper C-Murder, released on September 5, 2000 on No Limit Records and was produced by Jermaine Dupri, Donald XL Robertson and Carlos Stephens.The album features guest appearances by Fat Joe, Snoop Dogg, Da Brat, Jermaine Dupri, Silkk the Shocker and Young Gunz. Trapped in Crime was another success for C-Murder, peaking at #8 on the Billboard 200 and becoming his third straight album to land in the top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart while simultaneously making it to #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter was born September 4, 1981, She is an singer, songwriter, and actress. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, she performed in various singing and dancing competitions as a child and rose to fame in the late 1990s as lead singer of R&B girl-group Destiny’s Child. Managed by her father Mathew Knowles, the group became one of the world’s best-selling girl groups of all time. Their hiatus saw the release of Beyoncé’s debut album, Dangerously in Love (2003), which established her as a solo artist worldwide; it sold 11 million copies, earned five Grammy Awards and featured the Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles “Crazy in Love” and “Baby Boy”.

In Control, Volume 1 is an album by hip hop producer Marley Marl of the Juice Crew, released September 20, 1988 on Cold Chillin’ Records. The album compiles ten studio recordings by Juice Crew members and artists affiliated with Marley Marl. It showcased his style of hip hop production and sampling at a time when he became one of the first super-producers in hip hop music. The album is broken down track-by-track by Marley Marl in Brian Coleman’s book Check the Technique.

In Hip Hop History Today “Junior M.A.F.I.A. released Conspiracy” August 29, 1995

Conspiracy is the debut album of hip hop group Junior M.A.F.I.A.. The album debuted at number 8 on the Billboard 200, selling 69,000 copies in its first week. Upon its 1995 release, it garnered much attention and gained even more hype when singles “Get Money” and “Players Anthem” were released. It features member The Notorious B.I.G. on four tracks in addition to his production contributions. The single “Get Money” contains a sample from “You Can’t Turn Me Away” by Sylvia Striplin. The album has been certified gold by the RIAA.

In Hip Hop History Today “Tech N9ne released Anghellic” August 28, 2001

Anghellic is the third studio album released by Kansas City based rapper Tech N9ne on August 28, 2001. In 2001, the song “Tormented,” appeared in a scene of the TV series Dark Angel, playing for nearly two minutes in the background of a bar scene contained in the season two episode “Two.” The album was re-released in 2003 with additional songs and remastered sound as Anghellic: Reparation. This version was released through Strange Music after conflicts with JCOR Entertainment during its original release.
