In Hip Hop History Today “Outkast released Speakerboxxx The Love Below” September 23, 2003

Speakerboxxx/The Love Below is the fifth studio album by hip hop duo OutKast, released September 23, 2003 on LaFace Records. Issued as a double album, its playtime of more than two hours is distributed over solo albums from each of the group’s members. Speakerboxxx is the solo project of Big Boi and a Southern hip hop album with a P-Funk influence, while André 3000’s The Love Below features psychedelic, pop, funk, electro and jazz styles. Speakerboxxx/The Love Below received widespread acclaim from music critics, who praised the consistency of Big Boi’s Speakerboxxx and the eclectic musical style of André 3000’s The Love Below. The album was supported with the hit singles “Hey Ya!” and “The Way You Move”, which both reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, and the top five hit “Roses”. Speakerboxxx/The Love Below has been certified diamond and 11 times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for shipping more than 11 million units (in this case, 5.5 million double album sets, which are double-counted by the RIAA.

In Hip Hop History Today “Trick Daddy released www.thug.com” September 22, 1998

www.thug.com is the second studio album by rapper Trick Daddy, who previously released his debut album known at the time under the name as Trick Daddy Dollars coming on the heels of Based on a True Story. It was released on September 22, 1998 by Warlock Records and Slip-n-Slide Records. The album managed to peak at number thirty on the Billboard 200, the fifth highest peak of any Trick Daddy album. In Hip Hop History Today “Craig Mac released Project Funk Da World” September 20, 1994

Project: Funk Da World is the debut studio album by rapper Craig Mack, released September 20, 1994. The album was the second release on Bad Boy Records, following The Notorious B.I.G.’s classic Ready to Die by one week. Propelled by the success of the Platinum-selling smash hit single “Flava In Ya Ear”, the album reached Gold sales status on February 22, 1995. “Flava In Ya Ear” also featured a successful remix (not included on the album), featuring guest verses from The Notorious B.I.G., Busta Rhymes, Rampage and LL Cool J. The album’s second single, “Get Down”, was the rapper’s second Top 40 hit in 1994 and achieved Gold sales status in April 1995.

In Hip Hop History Today “Doug E. Fresh was born” September 17, 1966

Douglas E. Davis was born September 17, 1966, he is better known by the stage name Doug E. Fresh. Doug is a Barbadian born rapper, record producer and beat boxer, also known as the Human Beat Box. The pioneer of 20th-century American beatboxing, Fresh is able to accurately imitate drum machines and various special effects using only his mouth, lips, gums, throat, tongue and a microphone.

In Hip Hop History Today “The Sugarhill Gang released Rapper’s Delight” September 16, 1979

“Rapper’s Delight” is a song recorded in 1979 by hip hop trio The Sugarhill Gang. While it was not the first single to feature rapping, it is generally considered to be the song that first popularized hip hop in the United States and around the world. The song is ranked #251 on the Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and #2 on both About.com’s and VH1’s 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs. It is also included in NPR’s list of the 100 most important American musical works of the 20th century. The song was also named as the Greatest Really Long Rock Song of all time by Digital Dream Door. It was preserved into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress in 2011, calling it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” The song was recorded in a single take.

In Hip Hop History Today “Nas was born” September 14, 1973

Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones was born September 14, 1973, better known as Nas. He is a rapper, songwriter, record producer and actor. Nas has released eight consecutive platinum and multi-platinum albums and sold over 25 million records worldwide since 1994. He is also an entrepreneur through his own record label, he serves as associate publisher of Mass Appeal magazine and is the owner of a Fila sneaker store. He is currently signed to Mass Appeal Records. His musical career began in 1991 when he was featured on Main Source’s track “Live at the Barbeque”. His debut album Illmatic, released in 1994, received universal acclaim from both critics and the hip hop community; it is frequently ranked as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. He did Illmatic‍ ’​s “N.Y. State of Mind” in one take. Nas’ follow-up album, It Was Written, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, stayed on top for four consecutive weeks, went Platinum twice in only two months and made Nas internationally known. Nas signed to Def Jam. In 2010, he released a collaboration album with reggae artist Damian Marley, donating all royalties to charities active in Africa. His eleventh studio album, Life Is Good, was released in 2012, and was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. Nas is often named as one of the greatest hip hop artists. Trill is the debut studio album by hip hop recording artist and a UGK’ member Bun B. It was release on September 13, 2005, by Rap-a-Lot Records, Asylum Records and Atlantic Records. The album debuted at number 6 on the Billboard 200, with first-week sales of 118,000 copies in the United States. Trill was supported by four singles, including “Draped Up” featuring Lil’ Keke, a remix to “Draped Up”, which features guest appearances from the H-Town’s all-stars, “Git It” featuring Ying Yang Twins and “Get Throwed” featuring Pimp C, Young Jeezy, Z-Ro and Jay-Z.

You Nasty proved to be a success, peaking at #12 on the Billboard 200 and #4 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, as well as producing 2 charting singles, “2 Bitches” and “You Nasty”, which peaked at #2 and #6 on the Hot Rap Singles respectively.
