In Hip Hop History Today “Junior M.A.F.I.A. released Conspiracy” August 29, 1995

Conspiracy is the debut album of hip hop group Junior M.A.F.I.A.. The album debuted at number 8 on the Billboard 200, selling 69,000 copies in its first week. Upon its 1995 release, it garnered much attention and gained even more hype when singles “Get Money” and “Players Anthem” were released. It features member The Notorious B.I.G. on four tracks in addition to his production contributions. The single “Get Money” contains a sample from “You Can’t Turn Me Away” by Sylvia Striplin. The album has been certified gold by the RIAA.

In Hip Hop History Today “Tech N9ne released Anghellic” August 28, 2001

Anghellic is the third studio album released by Kansas City based rapper Tech N9ne on August 28, 2001. In 2001, the song “Tormented,” appeared in a scene of the TV series Dark Angel, playing for nearly two minutes in the background of a bar scene contained in the season two episode “Two.” The album was re-released in 2003 with additional songs and remastered sound as Anghellic: Reparation. This version was released through Strange Music after conflicts with JCOR Entertainment during its original release.

In Hip Hop History Today “Outkast released ATLiens” August 27, 1996

ATLiens is the second studio album by hip hop duo OutKast, released on August 27, 1996, by LaFace Records. The duo wanted to improve on their 1994 debut album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and gain respect for their growing Southern hip hop scene. OutKast recorded ATLiens in sessions at several Atlanta studios—Bosstown Recording Studios, Doppler Recording Studios, PatchWerk Recording Studio, Purple Dragon Studios, and Studio LaCoCo—as well as Chung King Recording Studio and Sound On Sound Recording in New York City. ATLiens debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart and it sold nearly 350,000 copies in its first two weeks of release. The album was very well received by music critics upon its release, who praised the record’s lyrical content. It has been certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), for shipments of two million copies in the United States.

Home Field Advantage is the debut studio album by hip-hop group The High & Mighty. It is mostly produced by DJ Mighty Mi, but also features production from The Alchemist and Reef. It features guest appearances from rappers, including, Pharoahe Monch, Defari, Evidence, Mad Skillz, Mos Def, Eminem, Cage, Bobbito García, Kool Keith, What?What?, Thirstin Howl III and Wordsworth.

In Hip Hop History Today “Public Enemy released Muse Sick-n-Hour Mess Age” August 23, 1994

Muse Sick-n-Hour Mess Age is the fifth studio album by hip hop group Public Enemy, released on August 23, 1994, by Def Jam Recordings. Its title is a stylization of the phrase “music in our message”. The album debuted at number 14 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling 56,000 copies in its first week. Upon its release, Muse Sick-n-Hour Mess Age received generally mixed to positive reviews from most music critics, amid controversy among critics and fans over Public Enemy’s relevance in hip hop at the time.

In Hip Hop History Today “J Dilla released The Shining” August 22, 2006

The Shining is the second official solo album from hip hop producer and rapper J Dilla, who died February 10, 2006. The Shining was incomplete at the time of J Dilla’s passing and was posthumously completed. Discounting the instrumental album Donuts, The Shining was the first full-length solo release by J Dilla featuring vocals since Welcome 2 Detroit five years earlier and as such was highly anticipated. It was released on August 22, 2006 through BBE Records. An instrumental version of the album followed its release.

Project English is the fifth studio album from rapper Juvenile. Two singles, “Set It Off” and “Mamma Got Ass” peaked high on charts. Project English reached #2 on the Billboard 200, with first week sales of over 213,000 copies. Project English was certified Gold by the RIAA., Juvenile left Cash Money Records claiming financial mismanagement and formed his own label, U.T.P. Records.

In Hip Hop History Today “T.I. released Trap Muzik” August 19, 2003

Trap Muzik is the second studio album by hip hop recording artist T.I., released on August 19, 2003, through Atlantic Records and his newly found record label Grand Hustle Records. Due to the poor sales on T.I.’s debut album I’m Serious (2001), T.I. asked for a joint venture deal with Arista Records or he be released from his contract; he was subsequently dropped from the label. In 2003, T.I. launched Grand Hustle Records with his longtime business partner Jason Geter and signed a new deal with Atlantic Records. The album spawned the hit singles “24’s”, “Be Easy”, “Rubber Band Man”, and “Let’s Get Away”. The album features guest appearances from 8Ball & MJG, Jazze Pha, Bun B and Macboney. With longtime T.I.’s record producer DJ Toomp serving as a executive producer for this album. Trap Muzik debuted at number 4 on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 109,000 copies in the first week. It also debuted at number 2 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. As of December 2003, the album became a certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), selling one million copies worldwide.

In Hip Hop History Today “MC Lyte released Seven & Seven” August 18, 1998

Seven & Seven is the sixth album released by MC Lyte. It was released on August 18, 1998, by East West Records and was produced by Milk Dee, Missy Elliott, The Neptunes, LL Cool J, Marc Kinchen, Dynamic Duo, Poke & Tone, L.E.S., Ron “Amen-Ra” Lawrence, DJ Peter Panic, MC Lyte and Nat Robinson. Seven & Seven was a critical and commercial failure and only reached #71 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums with no charting singles. The first single released from the album was the Neptunes’ produced single “I Can’t Make a Mistake”. Another Neptunes’ production “It’s All Yours” was released as a promotional single.

The World Is Yours is the second studio album by rapper Scarface. The album was released on August 17, 1993, by Rap-A-Lot Records. The album was not as acclaimed as his debut, Mr. Scarface Is Back, but sold strongly, breaking into the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart, and peaking at #1 on the R&B/hip hop album chart. “Let Me Roll” became a Billboard Hot 100 hit in 1993. The album was certified Gold by the RIAA on October 20, 1993.
