“My Name Is” titled on the CD cover as “Hi, My Name Is Slim Shady”, is a song by Eminem released Jan 25,1999. It is the debut single overall from his major label debut album, The Slim Shady LP. The song was ranked at #26 on “VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of the 90’s”. “My Name Is” also was ranked #6 on Q Magazine’s “1001 Best Songs Ever”. The recording garnered Eminem his first Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance at the 42nd Grammy Awards in 2000.

Patrick “Sleepy” Brown born January 24, 1970 is a singer-songwriter and record producer from Savannah, Georgia. He is one-third of the successful Atlanta-based production team of Organized Noize, which has created hits for acts such as OutKast, Goodie Mob, and TLC. TLC’s “Waterfalls”, penned by Brown and Organized Noize’s Rico Wade and Ray Murray, was a #1 hit single on Billboard’s Hot 100 in the summer of 1995.

In Hip Hop History Today “Questlove was born” January 20, 1971

Ahmir Khalib Thompson born January 20, 1971, known professionally as Questlove. He is a drummer, DJ, music journalist and record producer. He is best known as the drummer and joint frontman (with Black Thought) for the Grammy Award-winning band The Roots, serving since February 17, 2014, as the in-house band for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the same role he and the band served during the entire 969-episode run of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. He has produced for artists including Elvis Costello, Common, D’Angelo, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Bilal, Jay-Z, Nikka Costa and more recently, Al Green, Amy Winehouse and John Legend. He is a member of the production teams the Soulquarians, The Randy Watson Experience, The Soultronics and The Grand Wizzards.

In Hip Hop History Today “C Murder Arrested For A Nightclub Shooting” Jan 19, 2002

Rapper C-Murder, younger brother of No Limits Records founder Master P and uncle to rapper Romeo, was arrested in Louisiana in connection with a nightclub shooting that resulted in the death of a young fan. C-Murder was accused of shooting 16-year-old Steve Thomas on Jan. 12, 2002 at Harvey, Louisiana’s Platinum Club. Thomas later died from his gunshot wound. C-Murder, whose real name is Corey Miller, was one of Master P’s first signees on No Limit Records in the late ’90s. His 1998 debut album, Life or Death, climbed to Number 3 on the Billboard 200. Murder often collaborated with Snoop Dogg and Magic and lent his talents to hit singles such as 2000′s “Down 4 My Ni***z” and 2001′s “What U Gonna Do.” Murder is currently serving a life sentence in prison for Thomas’s murder.

In Hip Hop History Today “People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm was certified gold” January 17, 1996

People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm is the debut album by the alternative hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest, released April 17, 1990 on Jive Records. Though the album was well-received critically, it had little mainstream appeal. The album did earn the band a devoted following, however, within the alternative hip hop community. People’s Instinctive Travels was praised for its lyrical inventiveness and bizarre sense of humor, mixed with socially aware and literate message tracks. The record was given the perfect rating of 5 mics in The Source in 1990. It is one of three A Tribe Called Quest albums included in The Source’s 100 Best Rap Albums. It also was certified gold by the RIAA on January 17, 1996.

In Hip Hop History Today “Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born” January 16, 1979

Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001 she was a singer, dancer, actress, and model. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Detroit, Michigan. At the age of 10, she appeared on the television show Star Search and performed in concert alongside Gladys Knight. At age 12, Aaliyah signed with Jive Records and her uncle Barry Hankerson’s Blackground Records. Hankerson introduced her to R. Kelly, who became her mentor, as well as lead songwriter and producer of her debut album, Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number. The album sold three million copies in the United States and was certified double platinum by the RIAA. After facing allegations of an illegal marriage with R. Kelly, Aaliyah ended her contract with Jive and signed with Atlantic Records.

In Hip Hop History Today “Slick Rick was born” January 14, 1965

Ricky Walters born 14 January 1965, better known by his stage name Slick Rick, is a Grammy-nominated rapper. He has also been known as Rick the Ruler , MC Ricky D and Ricky Dee. He began his career in late 1983, in the hip hop genre, where he recorded a series of acclaimed recordings such as “La Di Da Di” and “Children’s Story”. He is known for the use of narrative in his raps and has been called “hip hop’s greatest storyteller. Slick Rick rose to stardom in an era known to fans as the Golden age of hip hop. His music has been frequently sampled and interpolated by other artists such as TLC, Black Star, The Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg, and Color Me Badd, with many of these songs later becoming hit singles.

Money, Power & Respect is the debut album by hip hop group The Lox. It was released on January 13, 1998, through Bad Boy Records and featured production from The Hitmen, Dame Grease and Swizz Beatz. The album found huge success, peaking at number 3 on the Billboard 200 and number 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and spawned two charting singles, “Money, Power & Respect” and “If You Think I’m Jiggy”. In 2008, the single “Money, Power & Respect was ranked number 53 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop.

Corey Woods born January 12, 1970, better known by the stage name Raekwon, is a rapper and a member of the Wu-Tang Clan. He released his solo debut, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx in 1995, and has since recorded numerous solo albums, as well as continuing to work with Wu-Tang and providing an extensive number of guest contributions to other hip hop artist’s works. He is the founder of his own label ICEH20 Records. Raekwon is often cited as one of the pioneers of the Mafioso rap subgenre.
